Review Next Door: Mango's Frozen Yogurt in Media

Patch contributor Lauren Avellino Turton gets the scoop on Mango’s Frozen Yogurt in Media.

Restaurant: Mango’s Frozen Yogurt  Address: 311 E. Baltimore Ave. in Media Rating (out of 5 stars): ★★★1/2 Style: Sit down or take out dessert spot  Food: Frozen yogurt, sorbet, toppings Atmosphere: Bright, colorful, casual Parking: Parking lot Service: Friendly and casual Price Range: Reasonable Unique Feature: It’s build-your-own sundae, which is fun for the whole family. I typically don’t eat dessert, but when I do crave a treat, my first choice is ice cream or frozen yogurt. If I am going to splurge, I’d rather go out to a parlor or restaurant, than have leftovers in my freezer to tempt me later. Mango’s Frozen Yogurt is a pretty sweet spot for my sweet tooth. When you walk through the door, expect funky, vibrant colors. Bright green …

Restaurant Review: SwirlFrutti

Matthew and Brigitte Rottman review SwirlFrutti in Broomall

Restaurant: SwirlFrutti Address: 2510 West Chester Pike, Broomall Rating: ★★★★★ out of 5 stars Style: Frozen Yogurt Shop Food: Quality ingredients, great selection Atmosphere: Tranquil, East-Asian Service: Gracious and kind Price Range: $0.49 per ounce of yogurt, smoothies $3.65 to $5.65 Parking: On-street and off-street parking lot The blast of intense summer heat has been an excellent motivator in searching out a frozen treat from Broomall's new shop, SwirlFrutti. This was the week to give into temptation and indulge. Looking back, we have no regrets. Monday afternoon, we opened the door to a serene little world, leaving behind us the noise of construction, traffic, and humidity. We were met with the lovely sounds of the choral group “…

Review Next Door: Gladwyne Market

Patch food writer Clara Park visits Gladwyne Market in this review.

Restaurant: Gladwyne Market Address: 359 Righters Mill Rd., Gladwyne, PA 19035 Rating: (out of 5 stars): ★★★ Style: Local market with extensive prepared foods section Food: Sandwiches, salads, seafood, American classics, sushi and vegetable sides Atmosphere: Brightly lit and welcoming Parking: Small lot Service: Friendly and accommodating Price Range: A bit pricier than other markets Unique Features: A haven for local goods including Bassett’s ice cream, Bucks County Coffee Co. beans and a wide array of Di Bruno Bros. products. There is also a selection of gluten-free goods. Every time I see a Walmart or other such super store, I feel more than a little sad. Each warehouse of ridiculously cheap goods has often crushed the local mom-and-pop…

Review Next Door: Georgio's Pizza & Burgers

This week food writer Clara Park reviews Georgio's Pizza & Burgers in Middletown Township.

Restaurant: Georgio’s Pizza & Burgers Address: 20 S. Pennell Rd., Media, PA 19063 Rating: (out of 5 stars): ★★★ Style: Pizzeria Food: Pizza, burgers and fries Atmosphere: Neighborhood pizza shop Parking: Small lot Service: Friendly and accommodating Price Range: Many items are under $10 Unique Features: Daily specials and coupons When I hear Georgio, I think of the famous designer Giorgio Armani or George Clooney (that’s what they call him in Lake Como). Georgio’s Pizza & Burgers in Middletown, doesn’t really have much in common with those two superstars. The name of the business sums it up nicely—they serve pizza and burgers. The fare and décor are simple but pleasant. I met up with a friend for a weekday lunch and we noticed a decent …

Review Next Door: Paramour in Wayne

Radnor Patch local editor Sam Strike reviews Paramour restaurant at the Wayne Hotel this week, a great idea for a Valentine's Day lunch.

Restaurant: Paramour (at the Wayne Hotel) Address: 139 East Lancaster Avenue, Wayne Rating: ★★★★ out of 5 stars Style: Modern Food: American Atmosphere: Contemporary and refined Parking: Lot Service: Friendly and accomodating Price Range: per person Unique Feature: Outdoor dining in warm months I guess it's no coincidence that the name of the Wayne Hotel's new restaurant is Paramour, which means "lover." If the food there moves you to love, then you would be well placed at the moment. Well, love is a curious thing. And in my book, very few restaurants earn my love. But the question should be, “Will you go back?” Yes, I will, and not just because I got a gift certificate from my family for Christmas. But Paramour might remain in my “…

Restaurant Review: Joe's Pizza

This week Patch food writer Clara Park reviews a local favorite, Joe's Pizza, in Broomall.

Restaurant: Joe’s Pizza Address: 38 S. Sproul Rd. Broomall, PA 19008 Rating: (out of 5 stars): ★★★ Style: Italian and diner specialties Food: Pizza, sandwiches, salads, seafood, cheesesteaks, panini and ice cream Atmosphere: Brightly lit and diner-like Parking: Large lot Service: Friendly and accommodating Price Range: Many items are under $10 Unique Features: Daily specials, kid’s menu and lottery tickets for sale. Joe’s Pizza is a staple in Marple and a local favorite, so I set out to find out why. A dining companion joined me for a weekday dinner at this local favorite. Joe’s Pizza is not some small hole-in-the-wall pizza joint, but a sizeable restaurant with a lunch counter and separate dining room (not to mention the large parking lot…

Restaurant Review: Upper Crust Restaurant and Pizzeria

This week Patch food writer Clara Park reviews Upper Crust Restaurant and Pizzeria in Newtown Square.

Restaurant: Upper Crust Restaurant and Pizzeria Address: 3711 W. Chester Pk., Newtown Square, PA 19073 Rating: (out of 5 stars): ★★★ Style: Casual restaurant and pizzeria Food: Pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, salads and seafood dishes Atmosphere: Brightly lit dining area with spacious booths and plain tables Parking: Small lot Service: Warm and welcoming Price Range: Most items are under $10 Unique Feature: Daily specials, large beer selection and breakfast items It’s rather tongue in cheek to name a pizza restaurant “upper crust” as pizza is emblematic of the everyman. Much like calling Miller High Life the “champagne of beers," the name of the restaurant is also a combination of both high brow and low brow. How would the pizza taste …

2011 Year in Review

Restaurant Review Highlights Of 2011

The greatest hits from a year of eating, writing and reviewing for Marple Newtown Patch.

While at the gym today, I had the chance to read a recap of the year’s biggest events and trendsetters in the magazine of record, People. Obviously, I am being a bit tongue in cheek... and while I can’t offer any beauty secrets from everyone’s favorite scene-stealing royal bridesmaid—or inspirational quotes from the cast of Bridemaids—I humbly present highlights from my inaugural year of dining/reviewing for Marple Newtown Patch. This is not an all encompassing list, just some of the greatest hits. Happy New Year, Marple Newtown Patch, may 2012 be even better!   Best Coffee: Burlap and Bean, 204 S. Newtown St. Rd. They roast their own beans! Need I say more?  Small batch, local roasters, Burlap and Bean also supply other coffeehouses in …

Review Next Door: Sang Kee Noodle Bowl

Patch food writer Clara Park reviews Sang Kee Noodle Bowl in Edgmont.

Restaurant: Sang Kee Noodle Bowl Address: 4755 West Chester Pk., Newtown Square, PA 19073 Rating: (out of 5 stars): ★★★★ Style: Upscale Chinese restaurant Food: Chinese-American specialties Atmosphere: Brightly colored Asian themed decor Parking: Lot Service: Efficient and accommodating Price Range: Affordable Unique Feature: This place has lunch specials and vegetarian items. Whenever my brother and sister-in-law visit from Charleston we have to go to Sang Kee at least once. "There is no Chinese food this good near us," they always lament. I too count myself a fan of the highly successful chain of Chinese eateries in the city and suburbs. While I prefer the Wynnewood outpost to the one in Philadelphia, I was curious what the Edgmont …

The one thing I would have to say that disappoints me about the Edgmont location is that their prices are higher than the Wynnewood location.   more ›

Review Next Door: Tiffin

Patch food writer Clara Park reviews Tiffin in Bryn Mawr.

BRYN MAWR–I used to think Indian food was one of those love it-or-hate it cuisines until very recently. My orders typically consist of protein and vegetable dishes with wonderfully rich sauces, spices and flavor combinations that showcase the diversity of Indian cuisine, but I realized that Indian food can also be plain and mild. Armed with this newfound realization, I took an Indian food newbie to Tiffin in Bryn Mawr for her first Indian food experience. I was positive I would be able to provide her with a great meal regardless of whatever dining hang-ups she may have had. Fortunately for me, she was game for anything. We started off with aloo papri chaat and vegetable samosas. The crisp flour dumplings filled with potatoes and peas were …
