NEWTOWN SQUARE–For the first time in 32 years, the teachers' contract in Marple Newtown School District was accepted by the Marple Newtown Education Association (MNEA) and approved by school officials at the reorganization meeting on Monday night. Vice President of the MNSD School Board Nancy Galbraith–who is also chair of the Delaware County Intermediate Unit–shared that people at the Intermediate Unit were shocked that they could receive an "early bird" contract. Galbraith thanked TJ Gretchen, president of the MNEA, teachers, and her fellow colleagues for making it happen. Marple Newtown school officials were honored at a school board meeting on Jan. 24th in recognition of School Board Appreciation Month.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–In recognition of January as School Board Appreciation Month, Marple Newtown School Board members were honored at a meeting on Tuesday night. "Every year in January we salute a special group of people, who help run the schools in our community–the nine elected members of our school board," addressed Superintendent Merle Horowitz to the public. "School directors are a special breed, who devote on average 20 hours a month or more in the case of Marple Newtown to the job." As a school board member, Horowitz said they make difficult budget decisions, hire staff, selecte textbooks, review bus schedules, monitor student progress and much more. NEWTOWN SQUARE–Janet Daly, a product of Marple Newtown School District, is Marple Newtown Education Association's Teacher of the Year honoree for the 2011-12 school eyar. Daly holds an undergraduate degree in elementary education and a Master’s degree in multicultural studies. She has ELL (English for Language Learners) certification from Pennsylvania and has been teaching ELL for 26 years. Daly organizes field trips for ELL children, visits families in their homes when there is a need and ran tutoring programs before school for ELL students in their schools. She and the ELL team of teachers in the Marple Newtown School District organize a family fun night for the school district ELL children and their families every year. Long-time locals…
