Don't let the name fool you. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Pavement Survey van isn't just looking at pavement. You might have seen the vehicle on local state roads recently, as on Route 252 in Tredyffrin Township in the attached photo. According to PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum, it's a Location Referencing System van, and it's driving around making sure that the information in PennDOT's computer system matches reality. Blaum explained via email that the van verifies the locations of features like signs and bridges throughout the state. It even does spell-check: There are no cameras on the van. Truck inferno snarls traffic on the Blue Route for part of Tuesday morning.
A vehicle fire on I-476/Blue Route northbound caused traffic delays Tuesday morning. According to a release from Pennsylvania Department of Trasnportation via its Twitter feed, a vehicle caught fire on 476 Southbound near the St. David's exit before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. According to 6ABC, the vehicle, a truck, was carrying water and was put out by area firefighters. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The 'Operation Safe Holiday' campaign kicked off in Delaware County on Dec. 12 in front of the county courthouse.
MEDIA–PennDOT (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation), police and Delaware County officials kicked off regional impaired and aggressive-driving enforcement at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media last week as part of “Operation Safe Holiday,” a campaign encouraging safe driving through the holiday season. NEWTOWN SQUARE–The newly rehabilitated St. David’s Road bridge over Darby Creek in Newtown Township will reopen Thursday, Dec. 6, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced Wednesday. PennDOT’s contractor worked over the past four months to restore the structurally deficient bridge by rebuilding its deteriorated bridge walls; reinforcing the deck; reinforcing the foundation underneath the support abutments; performing masonry repairs and installing new guide rail. The stone arch bridge was built in 1810. It is 26 feet long and 24 feet wide. The structure carries an average of 6,500 vehicles a day. PennDOT tells Marple Newtown Patch St. David's Road bridge may open sometime early December.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–St. David's Road bridge is scheduled to reopen early December, according to Brad Rudolph, a safety press officer for the Pennyslvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). An exact date has not yet been determined. Earlier this month, Rudolph told Marple Newtown Patch the reopening of St. David's Road bridge had been delayed due to Hurricane Sandy and necessary additions that were needed for bridge repairs. Though the bridge did not sustain any damages from the storm, Rudolph said $100,000 worth of additions were necessary in repairing the bridge. Police and PennDOT are joining forces to keep the roads safe this holiday season.
Information provided by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation: Harrisburg – PennDOT and police statewide are joining forces for “Operation Safe Holiday,” an initiative including seat-belt, aggressive-driving and impaired-driving enforcement aimed at keeping roadways safe this holiday season. Hurricane Sandy has delayed the reopening of St. David's Road bridge in Newtown Square.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–It's already been nearly four months since construction to rehabilitate St. David's Road bridge began. An earlier predicted timeline had the bridge set to reopen in November but after Hurricane Sandy, the bridge may reopen at a later date. According to Brad Rudolph, a safety press officer for the Pennyslvania Department of Transportation, told Marple Newtown Patch that necessary precautions were taken before Sandy's arrival. "Before the storm hit, crews took the necessary precautions by removing scaffolding and other equipment at the construction site," said Rudolph.
