Prayer Vigil Friday for Sarah Murnaghan

A prayer vigil is held for a 10 year old in need of a lung transplant as federal official says she can not intervene with organ donation policy.

An Interfaith Candlelight Prayer Vigil for St. Davids Episcopal Church parishioner Sarah Murnaghan will be held on Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m. in the Wayne church's chapel.

She is a parishioner of St. David's, and the church has been ministering to the family for the past year and a half, according to St. David's.

Sarah, of Newtown Square, has been on both the adult and pediatric lung transplant list for 18 months. Because of her age and organ transplant policy, she will only receive adult donor lungs after all adult candidates, regardless of how sick they are, have the opportunity to accept them. There are far fewer pediatric lungs available.

If Sarah were 12 years old she would immediately be eligible for the next available lungs from an adult donor.

On Friday, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius requested that Dr. John Roberts, president of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Board, re-evaluate the organ donor policy regarding children, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

However, Sebelius made a statement to a Congressional panel on Tuesday saying she would not directly intervene in the transplant decision and would leave the decision to medical experts, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey and Rep. Pat Meehan asked that Sebelius keep with the spirit of transplant policy with those with the greatest medical need going to the top of the list.

Toomey and Meehan both said in a statement that they are not asking for an exemption for Sarah, but rather asking Sebelius to follow rules available now.

"[Sebelius] can set aside the under-12 policy on an emergency basis. Or she can direct the organ donor network to conduct a pilot program to add to the research about the suitability of adult organs transplanted into children," Toomey and Meehan said in a joint statement.
