Goose Fencing Ripped from Newtown Pond, Police Say

Officials are searching for those responsible for removing a fence late last month.

Police and Newtown Township officials are searching for those responsible for removing a fence late last month.

Township Manger Michael Trip reported to police that in mid-March 2013 the township highway department installed several hundred feet of goose fence around the pond in Greer Park, in an effort to keep the geese out of the pond and keep it clean, according to Newtown Police.

The cost of installation was about $800 in materials and labor, according to police.

Trio reported to police that during a routine check in late May he found that someone had ripped down all of the goose fence and thrown it in a pile, a short distance from the pond, according to police.

The fence had been intact days prior, according to police.

Paul Seligson, of the Environmental Advisory Council, said at the June 24 township meeting that the 3-foot fence was erected around the pond to discourage geese from using it as a landing.

"A citizen has ripped it all out and had just left it on the ground," Seligson said.

The material is now with the township and the fence does not exist at the moment, he said.

"It's man hours to put it back up," Seligson said. "And right now is not the season to put it back up and I'm told we should wait until September or October to put it back up."

The Township Board of Supervisors agreed that whoever is found to have removed the fence will be prosecuted.
