Supervisors Approve 2013 Budget With 2.9% Tax Hike
The 2013 budget calls for a 2.9 percent tax increase for Newtown Township residents.
NEWTOWN SQUARE–The Newtown Township Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the 2013 budget at a special supervisors’ meeting on Thursday.
The budget includes a 2.9 percent tax increase, which is down from the original 4.5 percent increase that was proposed in the preliminary 2013 budget. The millage rate will be raised to 2.73 from the current rate of 2.664.
The average homeowner in Newtown Township, based on an average home assessed at $250,000, will pay $20 more in township taxes in 2013. This would bring the average homeowner’s real estate taxes to $685 per year, up from $665 per year.

Township expenditures for 2013 will total to $7,729,192.
In addition, supervisors announced Thursday night that the township has settled with former Township Manager James Sheldrake. Sheldrake sued the township for breach of contract.

The case went to the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas and Judge Christine Fizzano Cannon determined in a settlement conference that the case should be settled for $43,000, to which the township settled for that amount. According to Trio, this settlement has been included in the 2013 budget.
The supervisors also approved Newtown Police Chief Chris Lunn's salary for $97,744 per year. Lunn was appointed as the acting chief of the Newtown Township Police Department after former Police Chief Dennis Anderson resigned in November.
