Melvin Robbins, Half of Marple Newtown's Cutest Couple, Dies at 88

Broomall's sweetest love story has sadly come to end with the passing of Melvin Robbins.

Broomall's sweetest love story and Marple Newtown Patch's Cutest Couple sadly have been separated by death.

Melvin Robbins, 88, died on Aug. 14, according to his daughter and obituary on legacy.com

June and Melvin Robbins were a couple that even strangers aspired to be like. The two were entered into Patch's Cutest Couple Valentine's Day Contest in February 2013 and although they didn't win the ultimate prize, it was clear the Robbins had already won the ultimate prize in their love for each other.

The Robbins celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.

June, 86, met her husband Melvin during her teen years when she was attending Olney High School in Northeast Philadelphia.

June told Patch in February that she fell in love with Melvin and his "blonde wavy hair and pompadour hairstyle, blue eyes and cute lips." But, most of all, he was an overall "sweet guy" who made her laugh.

The couple's love stood the test of war times too. When World War II began, Melvin enlisted to serve with the U.S. Navy for six years and the two continued their relationship through letters. After the war, and a few ups and downs the Robbins married in 1947.

Melvin built a career owning several variety stores in Philadelphia while they lived in a rowhouse in the Logan section of the city with four children. But as their family expanded, the Robbins began searching for a larger home in the suburbs, and decided on Broomall. They have been residents of Broomall for more than 56 years.

The Robbins raised seven children in Broomall who all attended Marple Newtown High School and they have shared their great love story for generations—with their 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

During the Patch contest, many readers commented on how the Robbins love leapt through their pictures and into our hearts. Commenter Andrew said it best when he wrote: "I was told to vote for another couple, but after seeing Mel & June how could you resist. When I grow up I want to be Melvin."
